Installing
a radio / CD player
My car still
has its original 32-year old radio
installed in the centrepiece of the facia.
In order not to interfere with the
period detail of the facia, I decided to install
a CD player in the parcel
shelve in the front passenger foot well.
The original radio
The parcel shelve in the passenger foot well seemed to be
an ideal position for the CD player
Using normal shelve brackets from the local hardware
store I produced custom brackets for the cradle.
The cradle installed in the parcel shelve
As the wires were to run under the carpeting to the rear of the
vehicle,
I decided to protect the wiring with a special plastic coil sleeve.
I strung the wiring loom up between two poles in the carport,
which made this task easier.
The completed wiring loom ready for CD player installation.
Cutting holes in the rear parcel shelve was not an option, so I
installed
the speakers using the optional rear seatbelt mounting points.
The installed speaker. Note the original radio speaker next to it.
As I did not want to interfere with the car's electrics, I powered
the CD player
direct from the battery located in the boot (trunk) of the vehicle.
As an extra precaution I installed a cut-off switch to prevent
the CD player from draining the battery over time
when the vehicle is not in use.
Finally installing the CD player.
